I support the free sharing of knowledge, culture, and art (free as in “free speech”, not “free beer”). In a culture that tries to claim, own, and hoard everything, the value of “freedom” is often overlooked. That is why I’ve licensed my blog with the CC BY-SA License, which qualifies it as a freely licensed work as explained in the Definition of Free Cultural Works.
This license respects the four fundamental freedoms of free cultural works:
- You are allowed to use the work.
- You are allowed to study and apply the work.
- You are allowed to redistribute the work.
- You are allowed to modify the work and release the modified work.
There are only three restrictions, which do not impede the freedom of the user:
- You are not allowed to restrict others’ access to the work.
- You must give proper attribution and retain the copyright notice.
- You must release any derivative works under the same or similar license.
For a more complete explanation of what this means, check out the link to the actual license above, as well as this handy guide.
I also ask, if you intend to use anything I write for any purpose, that you let me know. You aren’t required to do so, but it’s nice to know that someone finds my writing useful. And if you have any questions, please contact me.
